Balena develops balenaOS, a minimal Linux operating system, and balenaCloud, a service for deploying and managing containerised applications across fleets of edge devices such as Raspberry Pi, NVIDIA Jetson and industrial gateways. Developers push code with git and get builds, releases, remote SSH and device variables. The open-source tooling includes balenaEtcher and openBalena, and the company works as a distributed team.

Known limits
- Production and Enterprise plans normally require an annual commitment
- Only Free includes unlimited users; paid plans include 1 to 5 seats and charge per role beyond that
- openBalena (AGPL v3) lacks the web dashboard, delta updates, public device URLs and multi-user support
- Devices must run balenaOS; boards outside the supported list need the custom device support programme
- Dedicated support with a 60-minute response time is Production-only
