Medical IoT (IoMT)

Connected medical devices and the systems around them, from wearable monitors and infusion pumps to hospital asset trackers, used to collect data and support care.

Medical IoT, often abbreviated IoMT, covers devices that are regulated as medical equipment as well as the supporting infrastructure in hospitals and homes. Examples include connected infusion pumps, bedside monitors feeding a central station, implantables with wireless telemetry, and wearables used for remote patient monitoring. Hospitals also use IoT for non-clinical purposes such as locating wheelchairs and monitoring refrigerator temperatures.

Security is the dominant concern. Many devices run old software and cannot be patched easily, yet they sit on the same network as everything else, which is why network segmentation and inventory are standard controls. Device certification and data protection laws add process on top of engineering. The guide IoT in healthcare covers use cases and constraints.
