Commissioning is the installation-side counterpart of provisioning. Where provisioning gives a device an identity, commissioning puts it to work in a specific place: joining it to the local network, assigning it to a room or an asset, calibrating it, setting thresholds and confirming that readings arrive where they should. The word comes from building services, where a new HVAC system is commissioned before handover.
In consumer products commissioning is the “pairing” step, and standards such as Matter spend considerable effort making it reliable, using QR codes and a short setup code so a user can add a device to a controller in a few taps. In industrial or building projects it is a formal phase with checklists and sign-off, and a frequent source of delay when devices were provisioned for the wrong site or firmware.
