The application layer is where IoT data earns its keep. It holds the services that receive telemetry, the databases that keep it, the rule engine that triggers actions and the user-facing software: a dashboard for a facility manager, a mobile app for a homeowner, an integration into a maintenance system. Many of these functions are packaged by an IoT platform, hosted in the cloud or on site.
Because it is the layer users see, it is easy to treat it as the whole product, but it depends on everything below being well specified. A dashboard cannot show what the sensors never captured, and an automation that assumes instant delivery will misbehave over a lossy radio link. Some architectures add a separate processing layer between network and application; the IoT architecture layers guide explains the variants.
