ISO/IEC 30141 is the joint ISO and IEC reference architecture for the Internet of Things. It does not prescribe protocols or products. Instead it describes IoT systems from several viewpoints, such as functional, system and communication, and defines domains including the physical entities, sensing and controlling devices, operations and management, applications and users. It builds on the IoT vocabulary standard in the same series.
The value is a shared language. When a buyer, an integrator and a vendor discuss where the perception layer ends and the application layer begins, or who is responsible for identity management, a reference model avoids arguments about terms. The trade-off is abstraction: the document guides architecture reviews and procurement specifications, but an engineer still needs concrete guides. Our overview IoT architecture: the layers maps the common layer model onto practical components.
