Industrial IoT (IIoT)
The use of connected sensors, controllers and analytics in manufacturing, energy, utilities and other industrial settings, where reliability and safety come first.
Industrial IoT connects machines, production lines and infrastructure to data systems so that operations can be monitored and optimized. It differs from consumer IoT in its constraints: equipment runs for decades, networks are segmented for safety, and a dropped message can stop a line. Protocols such as OPC UA and Modbus bridge the gap between legacy PLCs and modern platforms.
Typical uses are condition monitoring, energy tracking, quality inspection and asset utilization. The hard problems are integration with existing SCADA and MES systems, operational technology security, and proving value beyond a pilot. The Industrial IoT guide covers the stack from sensor to dashboard and the organizational questions that come with it.
