Industry 4.0

A framework for digitized manufacturing in which machines, products and systems exchange data and coordinate with limited human intervention.

Industry 4.0 is the name given to the fourth industrial transition, following mechanization, electrification and basic automation. Its core idea is the cyber-physical system: physical equipment paired with digital models and connected through standard interfaces so that production can be monitored, simulated and reconfigured quickly. Industrial IoT provides the sensing and connectivity layer; digital twins, analytics and flexible automation build on top of it.

The term originated as a German government initiative and has since become shorthand for factory digitization in general. In practice, most programs start small: instrumenting a few machines, feeding a MES, and measuring utilization. The trade-off is that the vision is broad while budgets and legacy equipment are specific. Our Industrial IoT guide separates the vision from the deployable parts.
